Match Report
First game for the Blacks saw them travel to Toorak Park to face Prahran. Pre game talk by Steve told the boys that they were a strong team and not to get worried about the scoreboard, but just get in and get the ball and kick it.
The pep talk worked. The ball came out of the centre early with Tom Dixon getting the first kick of the game to push the ball forward. The ball never got out of the forward line for most of the quarter, with strong defence keeping it locked in. Patrick burst through the congestion and after one bounce of the ball, he broke a tackle to score the first goal of the season. Some strong marks by Zac helped keep the ball forward, with Darcy running round and scoring the second goal from deep in the pocket. Corey beat 4 opposition players to get the ball out of the centre, which led to Lain running on to kick the third goal while being chased down by 6 Prahran players. Hugo had a kick for goal from deep in the pocket while under a lot of defensive pressure and was unlucky to hit the post. Darcy had a long set shot for goal, but the ball drifted right to go through for the second point of the quarter. 3.2 to 0.0 at quarter time.
The dominance continued in the second quarter, with Patrick and Darcy teaming up well, which saw Darcy kick the first 3 goals of the quarter. This combination contributed to the fourth goal, with Patrick passing to Darcy who kicked to the strong hands of Lain who got the ball to Dante, who kicked truly for the fourth goal of the quarter. 7.2 to 0.0 at half time.
Prahran came out fighting in the second half. Their push forward was stopped by strong defence by Kai, enabling Dante to shoot for goal, with the ball falling short and being scooped up by Zac who snapped a goal from a difficult angle. The second goal came after Zac kicked forward where Darcy was able to gather up the ball in the goal square and kick his fifth goal. Good defence by the backline including Subaru saw the Blacks hold a much more competitive Prahran side scoreless for another quarter. 9.2 to 0.0 at 3 quarter time.
Blacks pushed forward early, but Prahran demonstrated strong defence. A good mark Eoin kept the ball in the forward line, with a centring kick to Louis, who kick towards the congested goal square, where the ball was crumbed by Lain who snapped over his shoulder to goal. The 11th goal came after Patrick burst out of the pack to an open goal square and check-sided one through. This was the last push forward by the Blacks as Prahran made a desperate bid to trouble the scorer. Great defensive play by Subaru and Zac saw Prahran unable to get the ball clear. A free kick on the siren saw a long set shot for goal to Prahran, but the kick was smothered, with the Prahran side being held scoreless, despite them being more competitive in the second half. A 68 point win to the Blacks.
After the game, Coach Steve was impressed by the team effort of all the boys. First gamer Harry got recognition for his consistent pressure which helped set up a number of goals. Another first gamer Lain also received recognition for his all round contribution, and Darcy for his 5 goal effort.
