St’Kilda City Blacks U9 v Prahran Match Report

3rd July 2011 at Wattie Watson Oval

THE GAME

Prelude

There’s a saying in footy that you play how you train so the signs were good going into today’s game after the boys trained the house down on Thursday night.

Qtr 1

Corey lost the toss & Prahran took the hurricane like wind advantage as expected. However with Jules, Zac, Angus & Lainy solid in the centre, Kai great in the ruck & Darcy giving great run out of the backline St’Kilda City held sway for much of the first quarter. Prahran finally goaled around the 5-minute mark. A sensational piece of play led St’Kilda to answer Prahran’s goal, Darcy bounced down the wing, passed to Pat, who kicked long to Dante who kicked truly. Other highlights of the first quarter were Sean’s great handpass & a great shepherd by Darcy to set Pat up for a goal only to be robbed by the siren. Scores all but tied up at quarter time.

Qtr 2

Now it was our turn with the wind & no time was wasted in getting on the board. A sensational handpass by Rex set up a great goal to Pat.  Pat then followed up with another goal from the pack & a huge 30-metre goal to Subaru had St’Kilda City well on top. With Harry, Louie & Noah playing superbly & Zac impassable in defence, Prahran didn’t look like scoring. When they did finally mount a forward thrust it was cut off by a great Noah chase. Zac cut off another Prahran forward thrust kicking long into the forward line where Lainy finished with a great goal. St’Kilda City well on top at Half Time.

Qtr 3

Coach Steve swung Izzy, Harry & Subaru on the ball & Angus to Centre half forward for the tough quarter into the wind. Prahran may have received a rev up from their coach as they came out like a different side after half time, & after numerous attacks on goal finally put one through around the 5-minute mark. This was followed by two more goals to Prahran & they were right back in the match trailing by only 8 points. St’Kilda City needed something & Pat, Louie, Hugo & Izzy worked hard to get the ball into our forward line where Darcy kicked a great goal. While the points went to Prahran in this quarter it could have been far worse if not for the great efforts of Noah in defence & great run from Darcy & Subaru. Coach Steve was not happy with this quarter, as we were second to the ball too often. St’Kilda City a couple of goals up at Three-Quarter Time.

Qtr 4

We were coming home with the wind but Prahran were pumped after their great Third Quarter. Noah & Louie however were having none of that & were solid in defence. Corey nearly snuck a goal through the pack, then Darcy goaled from about 30 metres. A few minutes later Darcy streamed down the wing kicking long to Sean in attack. Sean obliged by goaling, following a Krakour like move in one of the highlights of the day. Great pressure from Kai resulted in another shot on goal & the game was all wrapped up. Play was contained in our forward line for most of this quarter but when it did go out Ed was doing a great job of minding two Prahran forwards.

Great win to St’Kilda City.
