Match Report

The day dawned still and cold with dew on the ground but as the boys prepared for their first game at the recently revamped Wattie Watson oval, the early signs were all positive for a win against a similarly rated side East Brighton Vampires (wearing their “clash” strip). This was the clash of the Inner Southern Bayside suburbs and much was at stake.

Coach Sayers emphasised the need to start well as we have started all our games slowly and today we really were a big chance to get some early scoreboard pressure.

The side started superbly with a big tap from Oscar to Bobby and the Sainters were quickly into attack. Playing from half forward Dylan got a couple of long kicks, took a grab and managed a long bomb to Joel who marked it on a big angle near the point post. The skipper stepped around to widen the angle and cleverly snapped truly for our first goal. The backline led by Adam was repelling most attacks and Curtis, Cody and Bobby were pivotal in setting up attacking opportunities for the mid’s and forwards like Zach, Hugo and Elliot. The Vampires scored a nice goal and we were saved on the bell when the umpire called for a bounce after Adam stepped 3 millimetres over the line when kicking out.  (4 effective tackles)

Quarter time score – both teams on 1-1-7

The second quarter began furiously with Marco taking a grab and Oliver being enthusiastic in his tackling. Mac was staring to exert an influence and Oscar continued lay big tackles and winning hit outs. Connor won a couple of frees, Zac, Cody, Nicholas and Max were running hard but we couldn’t stop a long running goal from East Brighton and went in at half time down by 7.

Samuel got his hands on the ball and tried to start the run with Curtis but Brighton lifted their intensity at the ball and ran harder although skipper Joel was in everything.  (eight tackles)

Half time: StKilda City 1.1.7 East Brighton 2.2.14

The third quarter began with some coaching moves such as Connor in the ruck to give Oscar a chance to mark a couple at centre half forward and Cody, Max and Hugo started to get some kicks. Oscar has a real presence when he marks the ball and was playing well. Elliot, Zach and Nicholas incurred the wrath of the umpire giving away technical free kicks (kicking off the ground) but kept fighting hard. Coach Sayers was swinging the interchanges and Cameron, Dylan and Samuel managed to get it to Max who threaded a snap through about eight pairs of legs after swerving around to kick a great goal. His team mates came from everywhere to celebrate the former rugby mans first goal.

Hugo stamped his authority on the game in this period and marked Joel’s clearance then passed to Connor in the pocket and Connor threaded another goal through a crowded goal mouth and the Saints were on fire as they hit the lead for the first time. Harry worked hard and Marco gave the handball of the day to the running Declan who pumped it forward to the leading Cameron.  Curtis made a couple of tackles and did one double fisted clearance in a marking contest that brought cheering from the home crowd.  (eight tackles)

We couldn’t stop a another late goal however and at ¾ time the scores were Saints 3.1.19 to east Brighton 3.5.23

The last quarter began with Will getting it out to the tireless Bobby but Brighton attacked hard all quarter and if it weren’t for the marking and reading the play efforts of Adam Oulton at Full Back the Vampires would have been a lot further in front. Connor and Mac dominated the quarter but didn’t get enough run from the rest of the team. Some fearsome tackles were made from Oliver, Max, Oscar and Marco. Cameron started to look dangerous up forward but Brighton got a run on and scored 3 goals as we tired. Mac had at least 6 kicks this quarter and Joel was tireless but Brighton ran out winners after we failed to trouble the scorers in the last quarter.  (6 tackles)

StKilda City 3.1.19 East Brighton 6.6.42

Coach Sayers let the boys know that this had been a winnable game and our attack on the ball and run should be for 4 quarters but he praised the efforts of the team in the face of some interesting officiating and encouraged to lads to keep working for each other.

Marco and Cameron won the Brick awards and Cody  won most courageous. The best player award was won by the tireless skipper Joel Crocker who willed his body to many contests and had many effective possessions.
