Match Report

Winning isn't everything, but the will to win is everything.”  Vince Lombardi (famous American Football coach)

St Kilda City v Cheltenham home at Wattie Watson oval 12.30pm start.

The City boys really gave themselves a show this week although they were a bit undermanned with late withdrawals from Will and Samuel out with illness and Harry away.  Thankful of the late start, Dylan had spent the night being unwell and was still protecting his fractured nose so started on the bench.

First quarter: Once again we lost the toss and found ourselves kicking against a four goal wind favouring the beach end. Despite the early efforts of Kye and Bobby who had numerous early disposals, Cheltenham got away to a quick lead with an early goal. The City team then locked down beautifully and used the defensive boundary well. Mac was prominent and Bobby again handballed to the prolific skipper Joel Crocker who kept pumping the ball away from the Cheltenham goal. Cody was good and Zach used it well and we even got it down to our forward line once but couldnt quite manage to score. Nicholas nad Curtis were putting there heads over the ball and forcing it forward, Oscar took a trademark defensive speccie in a big pack and the team went in to the break after one of their best quarters for the season only down by 7 points.

St Kilda City 0-0-0 Cheltenham 1-1-7

Second quarter:

At the break, Coach Mick implored the team to kick long and congratulated Bobby whose attack on the air conveyance in the first quarter was ferocious. Connor was leaping athletically and winning the taps down to Elliot who was using his left foot to advantage and it didnt take long before Cameron got a free kick and sent through a fantastic drop punt for our first goal. Hugo had a purple patch and after snapping a long point he then snapped truly from 40 metres and the team was playing its best for the season. There were all the one percenters happening with voice, shepherding and gang tackling. Dylan came on and took a mark and Joel was in everything, putting up a long kick to the goal square and big Oscar stood tall and clunked a big mark then converted. Cody was reading it well and cleared a couple of times and Declan, Max and Marco were getting possessions. Joel marked 40 out grandstand side and kicked a long goal that bounced through to loud applause.  Kye and Connor were marking strongly. All the momentum was with City to applause from the families as they went to the long break with their biggest lead of the season.

St Kilda City 4-1-25  Cheltenham 1-1-7

Third Quarter:

The wind seemed to blow harder but the intensity of the City team stayed as we fought the elements. Elliot and Curtis were busy around the packs and both teams were appreciating the experienced umpire as he calmly explained each decision. Cheltenham kicked long but were getting points early and Adam had his work cut out kicking in, but of course did it beautifully. Eventually Cheltenham started kicking goals with long kicks and it bacame hard work. We stuck at it but Bobby had to go off with sore ribs and was replaced by Dylan who took a mark. We forced it forward through Kye who was dominating, Mac and Oliver assisted as Joel had a long shot cleared off the line before accepting another Elliot handball and with his second chance scored a goal with a snap against the wind. Kye and Joel were causing ball ups and as usual Curtis and Zach were on the bottom of the packs.

St Kilda City 5.1-31 Cheltenham 5.6-36

Fourth Quarter

Coach Mick gave  the team the direction for the last quarter to kick long with the wind but Cheltenham started the quarter well using the western side of the ground to soak up time. St Kilda were peppering away but not quite getting the goals. Joel snapped a couple of points and Hugo was unlucky in a marking contest. Hugo did mark on the grandstand side and aimed his kick across goal to Kye who had played a marvellous game but we couldnt quite get the big score we needed. Marco and Cameron were brave and bodies were flying everywhere as both first aid attendants were opening their first aid kits with regularity to stem the tears, sweat and blood. Cody was good and brave Bobby kept getting to the contest. Oscar continued to present and tackled well, Elliot was elusive and with Mac forward we were a chance. The ball went out of bounds ten times as Cheltenham played the boundary. Tension mounted as City scored a few points  and when the siren rang City found themselves down by the narrowest of margins- 1 point!!!. There were real tears as the team realised the opportunity that had just eluded them but all the parents and coaches were extemely proud of the effort. There is no doubt that another win will come and it is important the team continue to believe and improve at the rate they have.
