Match Report

St Kilda City v Mordialloc Under 11 East – Sunday 26th June

I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
Michael Jordan

First Quarter

The game was arranged for an early start (9.00am) at the home of Mordialloc and the day dawned sunny with a strong north wind favouring one end.

Skipper Joel correctly called heads and we found ourselves with the aid of a five goal wind for the first quarter. Using the taps from Connor in the ruck who had pulled himself out of his sick bed, Joel and Bobby were pumping us forward towards the presenting Hugo who spun around and snapped truly for our first goal. Hugo was on fire and snapped a point and was working hard to keep the ball in the forward line. Zach and Curtis were tackling well and Cody tapped the ball forward for Kye and Oscar to again put it out in front of Dylan who also snapped from 40 and saw the ball roll through with the aid of the breeze for a goal. We had started well with Declan and Nicholas putting their heads over the ball and winning free kicks. Unfortunately Mordy scored a goal against the wind and we went to the first break 7 points up

Second quarter

This proved to be our best quarter for the game as we defended against the wind and even managed 3 behinds into the gale. Adam Oulton at full back was tireless in his efforts to repel attacks and saved at least three goals for the quarter. Max, Oscar and Joel took great marks and Oliver ran the ball out a few times. Connor was marking the ball well, Samuel won a free kick and we used the defensive boundary well, allowing Mordy just the one goal for the quarter. Cody gained precious metres as he fearlessly tapped the ball in front of him and causing stoppages. It was encouraging to see Joel confidently use his non preferred left foot when under pressure.  As usual Curtis, Oliver and Elliot were sliding in and causing ball ups which stopped Mordies flow and at the end of the half the scores were:

Mordialloc 2-3-15 St Kilda City 2-5-17

Third Quarter

The wind was getting stronger and Coach Sayers let the team know that this was the big quarter for us and we needed to put pressure on the opposition and force mistakes. Again Connor took a big mark early and kicked a goal from 20 out, then big Oscar showing great agility snapped a high ball on his favoured left and the ball swung back with the breeze for a classic goal. The big crowd sensed something special applauded Marco getting involved and kicking long. Cameron looked dangerous kicking for goal and Joel snapped a couple of points. Connor snapped another great goal and he was dominating. Curtis won a free 30 out but his kicked dropped short and Hugo was onto it and snapped truly for his second goal. Declan and Bobby had a good quarter and Max, Oliver and Samuel were putting their bodies in and winning the frees. The boys went in to the break confident that they could hang on.

Fourth Quarter

The wind howled and Mordi peppered the goals and were getting lots of points putting Adam under enormous pressure as he parried a few shots through for rushed points. Special mention must be made of Adam’s wonderful kicking in. Elliot was strong and Oscar kept tackling as did Zach but it was very difficult to get any play going as short kicks were the order of the day to try and soak up time. There were lots of ball ups and boundary throw ins but eventually the dam wall burst and a Mordi player was allowed to mark by himself in the square and convert for the winning goal. The coaches clipboard was tossed down in frustration as the City boys bravely launched one more attack up to Hugo through Mac and Bobby. Mac lifted and got the ball to Joel, over to Connor but time ran out and we lost another close one by three points. We hadn’t quite got the numbers to the front of enough packs with the ball dropping short and we did make some errors tapping the board inboard when we should ahve hit the defensive boundary but we learn from it and look forward to the Beaumaris sharks next week.

Final Score Mordialloc 5-12-42 St Kilda City 6-3-39
