Match Report
Rd 2 vs Hampton Rovers
First home game at Peanut Farm for a couple of years. If we had any trouble finding the ground, Hampton certainly didn’t as they were dressed and going through their drills before we’d even arrived. Hampton were coming off a 60 point victory in the previous round so were chock full of confidence.
Our numbers were up for this round with the return of Max Weir, Callum, Alex Scott, Dan Parish and the Rowe boys. Dae captained the side and won the toss kicking to the pavilion end of the ground. A good start saw City get the first goal of the day through Howie. It was all pretty even for a while and Cheltenham scored a return goal before Callum scored our second major for the day to put us a goal up at quarter time.
Second quarter was all St Kilda, holding Hampton goalless and putting on another five to have us up by six goals plus at half time. Howie went berserk kicking another three, with Elijah and Matty Mac also kicking goals. Dan Parish and Sam Champion also came perilously close to adding further goals. The side was really clicking with the midfield of Bailey, Charlie Hicks, Lachy, Dae, Andrew and Alex running hard and keeping the ball in our forward line.
Cheltenham gave all they had early in the third quarter and managed to subdue the Saints scoring, but again the Saints had most of the play with Matty and Howie kicking another goal each. When Cheltenham did get into attack Oliver Woods, Max, Henry, Dan Hocking or Daniel Botic in his second game for the club turned it around to set the Saints off and running again. At three quarter time the Saints were still 6 goals in front.
Rob changed things around in the last quarter giving the backmen a chance to play in the midfield. They did their job and Connor, Sam Day, Charlie Williams and Oliver Woods and Henry further did not let up on Hampton. Neither did Howie and Matt Mac who both continued to have a day out kicking another two and three respectively. At the final siren it was St Kilda city 14 goals 8 behinds to Hampton 3 goals 4 behinds, a 70 point victory to the Saints.
Coach Rob was elated with the efforts of all the boys and the willingness to try and play running team football. Howie finished with a brilliant 7 goals and Matty Mac with an equally impressive 5 goals.
Final Score: Hampton 3 goals 4 behinds 22 pts
St Kilda city 14 goals 8 behinds 92 pts
Goal kickers: Howie 7, Matt Mc 5, Elijah and Callum 1 each.
