Match Report
Rd 6 vs Beaumaris 2
No Lachy this week and the coach asked for players to step up and fill in for that extra 10% that Lachy provides. Unfortunately few answered the call against a very determined Beaumaris side that turned around a 60 point loss two weeks ago into a 32 point win this time. Running with an empty bench the day started well with Captain Connor Bannister winning the toss….but…
For the first time this season the Saints were held goalless in the first half and Beaumaris’s four meant a big ask ahead in the second half. The first half saw Beaumaris dominate the centre and with their tall timber on fire their marking around the ground held sway. The times we did get it forward Beaumaris managed to run and clear the ball with great effectiveness. With the umpire reticent to pay any free kicks there was a lot of scrimmaging in packs and congestion around the ball. Unable to break free, the Saints tended to gather on the ball, and as a consequence lost their positional formation. When the ball was eventually cleared it was often to a Beaumaris player 20 or 30 metres from the pack on their lonesome.
To the boys credit they fought hard in the second half and matched it with Beaumaris. Play in the third quarter was spent mostly in the Saints forward line, but we were unable to register any majors, although the behind count was increasing. Beaumaris could also only score a couple of points for the quarter. Four goals down at three quarter time was not insurmountable, but a goal to Beaumaris with 30 seconds of the last quarter made it a tad harder. Dae and Howie were still crashing packs and Callum and Charlie Hicks were in and under and when Bailey marked straight in front and slotted truly the side line drew a collective breath as the Saints were finally on the board. Shortly after Dan Hocking repeated the dose for the Saints second of the quarter, but Beaumaris had kicked three of their own for the quarter to run out victors by 32 points.
Thanks to Patrick Bannister who again mixed it with the big boys. A deserved win by Beaumaris and we’ll put this one aside and come back bigger next week.
Final Score: Beaumaris 7 goals 6 behinds 48 pts
St Kilda City 2 goals 4 behinds 16 pts
Goal kickers: Bailey and Dan Hocking 1 each.
Go City!
