Match Report
Wattie Watson welcomed us back for our first game of the season here and turned it on for us, as if to remind us what we'd been missing. Freezing cold with a gusty wind blowing towards Port Phillip.
Struggling for numbers this week we were lucky to get Joel, Connor, Declan, Mac, Elliot and Hugo from the previous game to bolster our numbers. To a man they were exceptional and helped us to just sneak over the line.
Kicking with the wind in the first quarter it was a slow start, as although most of the play was in our forward line, Murrumbeena defended well. We managed two goals for the quarter, but importantly Murrumbeena managed a goal against the wind. The second quarter was similar to the first but with Murrumbeena in control. Hugging the boundary at every chance we defended well, with Murrumbeena trying to bomb long and not getting much value for their dominance. Murrumbeena scored only a couple of points for the quarter to leave the Saints one goal up at half time.
The third quarter was nearly a repeat of the first, with the Saints managing two goals and Murrumbeena again getting one against the wind. At three quarter time we were sixteen points up and hoping it was enough. Rob bolstered the defence in the last quarter and we were holding sway and even attacking more than Murrumbeena, but all of a sudden Murrumbeena managed to centre the ball and kick two goals. With a couple of minutes to go we were three points in front and it was on the line for the players as Lachy looked like he was about to run onto the ground to intercept another Murrumbeena attack.
The Saints managed to get the ball back to half way and put the brakes on as supporters counted down the last couple of seconds to leave the Saints three points in front at the final siren.
Great effort by both sides on a difficult day for football. Dae and Howie played super games and Matty Mac got a couple of goals as well as Oliver Woods.
Go City!
