Match Report
Rd 14 vs Cheltenham
Back to the Peanut Farm for the showdown. All available except Sam Champion, Elijah and Henry. Lachy was a popular captain and led from the front.
The Saints dominated the first half outrunning, tackling and outplaying their opponents. Max was unstoppable and though Cheltenham’s huge ruckman was getting plenty of tap outs the Saints were sharking well. At half time it was the Saints 7 goals 2 behinds to Cheltenham 3 goals 3 behinds.
Out for the third quarter with the same game plan. Cheltenham opened well with the first two goals for the quarter before we came back with one through Matty Mac who was having a great game on the forward line. Cheltenham had moved their side around a bit and were getting the benefit of some good run off the backline and winning the ball out of the middle. At three quarter time we were still two goals up and coming home with the wind.
The Saints had plenty of it in the last quarter, but Cheltenham still seemed to have the knack of turning defence into attack with some great individual runs down the ground. With the first two goals of the quarter Cheltenham hit the front and the Saints had their back to the wall. Another goal to Cheltenham before the Saints responded with one of their own. With two minutes to go we were still two points down, but again Cheltenham managed to thwart our attacks and held it up on the wing for to pull off a great comeback.
Although disappointed to go down by two points the boys were applauded off the ground, with many spectators saying it was the best game they’d seen in a long time. To rub further salt into our wounds, both Prahran and Hampton had convincing wins which boosted their percentage above ours. In the end we would have had to win by about 20 points to maintain our spot in the four.
Final Score: Cheltenham 9 goals 7 behinds 61 pts
St Kilda city 9 goals 5 behinds 59 pts
Goal kickers: Matty Mac 3, Lachy 1, Harvey 1, Connor 1, Charlie Williams 1, Bailey 1 and Andrew 1
Go City!
