U9 Reds Report
Round 9 - 20th June 2010
East Brighton v St Kilda City Reds
Some real wet weather footy, our boys came up against an undefeated team that played very well, it was pleasing to see the endeavour displayed and that we were still able to score against them. Thanks to Kate and all those that helped on Sunday night we had a great night and the boys loved it playing on the oval, see you Sunday at the back to the normal time.
Notes from the Coach
On a wet and breezy morning last week we were reminded that footy is a winter sport. I'm not sure why we played on only one third of the oval but it certainly assisted Brighton's rapid scoring. Our boys did their best and didn't stop trying. Thank you to the dads who helped this week and tonight (Thursday) - it helps keep the boys moving - and the level of participation in the practice match this evening was excellent. Home game this week and more improvement anticipated from our very keen boys.
Coach Pete
Round 8 - 6th June 2010
St Kilda City Reds v Ajax
I hope that you all enjoyed a sleep in on Sunday and a ready to jump back into action as our boys take on East Brighton this week. It is almost two weeks ago when we were all standing on the boundary line as the rain poured down in the last quarter.
Notes from the Coach
The best team work for the year in the first quarter, with lots of team talk and shepherding, went unrewarded up forward but the boys battled on well with many players now putting in second and third efforts in contested ball situations. Consistent effort over the game was finally rewarded in the last quarter with a great team goal and the boys continued going in for the ball despite the last 6-7 minutes being played in cold rain. Training as usual this week and the weekend off thanks to the Queen. Enjoy the sleep in at our half way mark. Training this week will be more team oriented activities and good old marking, kicking and handball practice. Thank you to the dads and mums who help out at training - it basically means better training for the boys.
Coach Pete
Round 7 - 30th May 2010
Beaumaris v St Kilda City Reds
Thanks to Adam Goldman for filling in last Sunday and from the sounds of it I missed an exciting and close game!! Adam did give me a few lines which I will include for commentary. The boys played a fantastic game. While it got away a little in the last quarter, they held a much larger and mo re experienced team to a very small lead for 3 quarters. All the boys lifted and played hard at the ball. Final scores 7-5-47 to 2-2-14
Notes from the Coach
A fantastic team effort this week against the highest scoring team in our Division, with the emphasis on 'team'. Our attack on the ball, shepherding team mates, handball and general team talk was our best so far and it showed on the happy faces of the boys after the game. On the track this week we will continue to focus on team based skills and talk, and look also to continue improvement in marking, handballing and kicking to targets. Looking forward to being at home this week.
Go the mighty Reds. Coach Pete."
Also, this week we almost had 25 players but a late illness (Jules) meant everyone got their three quarters (except for Thomas who got a boot to the jaw in the second)
Round 6 - 23rd May 2010
Mordi-Brae v St Kilda City Reds
Sunday we all made the trip down to Mordialloc where some of the boys where excited to be playing on a white frosty oval. Winter was captain for the day and lead the team out after a pre match address from Coach Pete where the boys were all asked to say what they would do for the team on the day. We all witnessed what was probably the best passage of play for the year that down that started deep in our defence with a one /two from Dillan to Che then onto Henry-Jo, then back to Che the ball travelled ¾ the length of the oval and deserved to be finished with a goal!! Coery made a great effort in the third quarter to chase and tackle the ball and beat three opponents in a determined passage of play, while Roman preformed well when moved into the Ruck, and Will Mc did a great job reading the play and ran off his man to pressure an opponent to force a turnover. Final scores 13-11-89 to 0-1-1.....
This week I will be away in Adelaide so please assist Adam who has kindly agreed to step in for the day has two roles on the week end being assistant coach and team manager. Thanks Adam
Notes from the Coach
Another in a series of weeks where our players improved in team work and talking with several players showing improved concentration and lots of great determination. Next week I plan to be a little more attacking, depending on the opposition, having concentrated to date on building a solid defence from which to go forward. I am aware of horror stories whereby many of the teams we have played have regularly been winning matches well in excess of 10 goals and our boys don't need that every week. Thank you to the mums and dads that have been able to find time to help out at training - it is greatly appreciated.
Round 5 - 23rd May 2010
East Malvern v St Kilda City Reds
At home on last Sunday to East Malvern and after caption for the day Dillon wan the toss and decided to kick to the Ocean end with the aid of a slight breeze. At half time although we were 2 goals down we all felt confident of a strong finish, as had happened in recent weeks. Unfortunately this was not to be the case and we could not match the opposition on the day, scores ended up 6-11-47 to 0-3-3.
A few parents asked about the June long week end, we have a bye as we do also in the middle week of the school holidays, as seen in the table below.
Notes from the Coach
Another improved effort this week with more players contributing positively each week. This week announcing that there will be three players Awards at season's end, and there may be more than one recipient in each category, which are: Big Improvers, Team Contributor & Most Consistent. Four parents are confidentially selecting two players in each category after each game. Big Improvers are either a first year player who shows obvious improvement from previous weeks or second year players who demonstrate improvement from last year and this year. Most Consistent are the players who contribute evenly over their three or four quarters. Team Contributors are players who do one or more outstanding team oriented action in a game.
Go the mighty Reds
Round 4 - 9th May 2010
East Sandy v St Kilda City Reds
Sunday, Mothers day, we continued to enjoy more good weather, and we all managed to get to the correct oval even with the wrong address sent, my apologies for the confusion, but that was the published address! A special mention goes to one mother that got to the match day oval first up even though she was attempting to navigate to the wrong oval, well done Natalie? Our caption and Birthday boy Will McIntyre shook hands with the opposition captain, umpire and then tossed the coin. The boys all battled very well but we were unable to match the bigger boys that took their marks and kicked longer than us. Like last week the Reds second half was more competitive but although close on a couple of occasions we were unable to get a score on the board. Sandringham East 7-4-46 to SKC Reds 0-0-0, bummer. After the game captain for the day Will led us all in a special “3 cheers for the Mums” and mother’s day presents that were kindly donated and wrapped by Lou McIntyre. These were all accepted with thanks by the boys as a SKCJFC Under 9 Reds gift for the Mums.... the next best thing to a win?
Notes from the CoachRound four saw the mighty Reds pitted against superior opposition but our boys gave their best to hold an unbeaten side to just two goals in a half of footy - our most committed effort from all players for the year. A huge thank you to Captain Will's mum, Lou, for the fab mother's day gift for all the players mum's and to Ted's mum Ali for the extremely helpful players/numbers cards for all the players parents. This week the players will continue to practice their marking and contested-ball winning skills and, if last week was an indicator, it should be a great game on Sunday. Go the Reds. Coach Pete.
Round 3 - 2nd May 2010
St Kilda City Reds v Murrumbeena Gold
Wattie Watson
On Sunday we all enjoyed being back at home and after winning the toss captain for the day, Ted Brown signalled the Reds would kick with the wind. Coach Pete provided some last minute advice to kick long and down the middle, but we gave up the advantage to a well drilled team and by half time things were looking a little shaky. The boys steadied after the long break and the oranges worked a treat, when Dillon snapped and hit the post to register our first score it nearly brought the house down!! The boys were fired up at the last break and we all thought we were still in with a chance as the opposition looked a little too comfortable in their warm up robes. Che and Dillon ended up with two goals each and we won the last quarter scoring 3-1 to 1-0 and set up some momentum for next week to continue the improvement.
The final score ended up Murrumbeena Gold 8-3-51 to SKC Reds 4-1-25.
Notes from Coach
Improved skills and footy thinking were more evident this week as the players played their best footy for the year with team handballs, shepherding and kicking more to position when going forward. The backline also contributed with more players staying in their positions meaning a better defence against a quick running side. Some great goals were kicked and everyone (on both sides of the fence) enjoyed the higher standard of play. Thank you to the parents and players for understanding the need for a couple of players to miss each week. This gives all players the chance to play at least three quarters. Players rostered off are still part of the team and are welcome to come to games and cheer their team mates on - go the mighty Reds.
Round 2 - 25th April
St Bedes v St Kilda City Reds
Mentone Oval
The final scores were St Bedes Mentone 10-8-68 to SKC Reds 2-3-15.
Notes from Coach
This week the boys tried the best on a man-sized oval against St Bedes, which had a couple of very quick ball carriers. Some individual highlights with a couple of the boys kicking their first goal and lots of excellent scrapping for possession and constructive handballs. On the track this week we will continue to focus on team-based activities and moving the ball more quickly to our forwards.
Back to Elwood this week and more improvement from the Mighty Reds.
Can you all let me know of any week that your son can not play throughout the season, this will assist in the team selection and enable Coach Pete to ensure that everyone gets a turn. The fixture is available on the web site and after the last match there will be a Lightning Premiership, the following (final) week a Presentation day and match against the SKCJFC Blacks team has been arranged. We have 25 registered players with a few more still putting in their paper work, so we will need to rotate a few players.....
Round 1 - 18th April
St Kilda Reds v Ormond
Wattie Watson Oval
We all, that's players coaches and administration staff, now have the first game under our belts and speaking for myself am happy about that!. Our competition, Ormond, on the day were just that bit better than us but with the final score being 12-9-81 to 3-2-20. It was great to see the lads all having a go and enjoying themselves.
Coach Pete's update
Despite a couple of players coming off illness this week, it was encouraging to see most players going in for the ball and then trying to do something positive with it, and there were some sustained and individual bursts of exciting play that makes the effort worthwhile for the players and their mums, dads, family and friends watching. This year the Reds are mostly first year players and compared to lasts years first game, I think they are better prepared to get in and have a real go at this stage. On the track this week we will be focussing on getting the ball out of defence more efficiently, having more players around the contested ball (not leaving teammates one out) and moving the ball more quickly when we have it. All these game aspects also rely on clearer team-talk from team mates. I can only encourage all parents to make the time to practice footy skills with their children during the week because the more they practice the more enjoyment they'll get from the great game. On to Mentone boys - Go the Mighty Reds. Coach Pete.
Can you all please make sure that all players have mouth guards, while this is not compulsory the club strongly recommend their use, it is best for the boys to get used to wearing them early as they will need them as they become older and progress with their football.
We had some new boys join the team for the first time and welcome to those new parents to our club. Thanks to all those people that assisted by volunteering it was greatly appreciated. Next week we play St Bedes Mentone away so remember it's white shorts with a late start
